About  Oak Island

Oak Island is on the south shore of Nova Scotia, Canada (located near the town of Chester). It has been a subject for treasure hunters since the late 1700's. It is rumoured to hold a vast secret of buried treasure with theories ranging from pirate treasure, Knights Templar treasure, Marie Antoinette's jewels, and William Shakespeare's manuscripts to religious artefacts such as the Holy Grail or the Ark of the Covenant. Since the late 17th century, attempts have been made to recover what may be buried on the island.

HOW IT ALL BEGAN:

The story of Oak Island has been preserved through word of mouth, beginning in the late 1700's when a boy named Daniel McGinnis found a depression in the ground by an oak tree which had a rope with a wooden plank hanging from one of its branches. He had heard a story about a dying sailor from the crew of pirate Captain Kidd who stated a treasure worth 2 million dollars was buried on the island. Daniel sought help from two of his friends, John Smith and Anthony Vaughn, and they began to dig. They discovered layers of flagstone, oak platforms, and coconut fibres which, to them, validated that something was buried on Oak Island. The boys had to abandon the dig after a certain depth due to sea water filling the hole but this would be forever known as the "money pit". You will find different variations of the story online, this is one account.

Since then, many people and companies have made attempts to recover the supposedly buried treasure. Today the island is privately owned.
